The world’s number one women’s tennis player, Iga Świątek, loses her 37-match Wimbledon streak to competitor Alizé Cornet. It ended 6-4, 6-2, in Cornet’s favor. Although broken, Świątek’s 37-match streak is still a rare and unforgettable feat in women’s tennis history.

After 29 different opponents, Świątek lost to France’s Alizé Cornet in Wimbledon’s third round. People are calling Cornet the Helena Sukova of the 21st century. Sukova ended Martina Navratilova’s record-holding 74-match streak in 1984.

“I mean, what she’s done this year is out of this world,” Cornet said, “and I can’t believe I’m the one that actually broke the streak.”

It was on the same court and during Wimbledon’s third-round match eight years ago, where Cornet beat the former number one player, Serena Williams. Cornet has had her best tournament year yet, reaching the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Opens and the third round at the French. It’s a good send-off for Cornet as she exits from the sport.

“I think that’s why I’m playing so good. It’s because I know it’s almost the end,” Cornet says regarding her coming retirement.

After her victory, Cornet tries to evade knowing her next opponent until the next day. “I just beat the world number one. I want to enjoy for a few hours, not knowing what’s next, not envisioning and be like, I’m going to play her, blah, blah, blah. I don’t want to know. Until tomorrow I’m not going to try to be on the social media because for sure I will find out.”

Świątek says she got “confused” during the match with Cornet. Because of her aggressiveness this season, Świątek unsuccessfully attempted to slow down the ball, which disoriented Świątek further, leading to her loss in the first set. In the second set, she tried speeding the ball up again, but to no avail.

“I didn’t come back to being solid,” she says, “Also, you know, when you play aggressively and you suddenly change the way you play, it’s not easy to keep that. Yeah, so I got a little bit confused…I didn’t tank it, but I just didn’t know what to do.”
