It started just after the Russian Revolution and the overthrow of their tsar. The Bolsheviks, a Russian political party, took power and seized complete control of the government. Now, they began to industrialize Russia with the intent to improve everything, but they needed to convince people that this was necessary. They needed a way of spreading propaganda.
They ended up deciding on china. Tea was a popular drink back then, so most people drank it. Tea required a Teacup to drink from, which was usually made of china. Soon, they drafted artists from all over the country to draw inspiring images of industrialization on the cups, such as effigies of the country’s leaders or commoners happily working on industrial projects. There was a negative impact in this movement, however. Artists were forced to work on this project because an independent artist was considered useless to society at the time. If they didn’t work on the project, they would be sent to prisons.
Despite the efforts of the artists, with hundreds of different designs both practical and impractical, the china turned out to be quite expensive to make and thus only the wealthy classes had contact with it, whereas the working-class people that were meant to buy it, almost never saw them. Eventually Stalin would take power and the project as well as the teacups would be forgotten. While they didn’t serve their purpose, nowadays we can find them in Museums and study their art in order to better understand ideas of the time.
