Ivan Fedotov, a Russian hockey player, was detained in Russia for evading military service, preventing him from competing for a spot in the National Hockey League training camp.

The Russian government can draft men between the ages of 18 to 27 into military service.

Evading the military force in Russia is a felony punishable by up to two years of imprisonment.

Ivan Fedotov is a six-foot-seven 25-year-old Finnish-born Russian Olympic goalkeeper. He is currently playing with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League under contract. Before signing with the Philadelphia Flyers, Fedotov played for the CSKA Moscow of the KH and the Russian Olympic hockey team.

Fedotov was detained in St. Petersburg, Russia. The military prosecutor’s office states that there are grounds to consider Fedotov an army evader. Fedotov fell ill in the process, and was sent to a hospital to recover.

In the hospital, Fedotov was not listed with the other patients and his parents were not allowed to visit him. The military police entered the territory of the hospital, and Ponomarev, a lawyer, introduced himself to them and they turned around and left.

“Since then, we have not heard anything. As far as I understand, they want to transfer him in a serious condition to some kind of military investigative body. While he argues as best he can that this is not necessary, but events are developing rapidly, now he does not get in touch,” says Ponomarev to CNN.
