Heather Watson had a streak to remember at Wimbledon this year. She was dominant all tournament but was unable to reach her first career Quarterfinals.
In the Round of 16, Watson faced Jule Niemeier and lost 6-2, 6-4. She was very disappointed after the loss, since Neimeier was a player she could beat and earlier this season she defeated her in a third set tiebreaker. At the time, Watson was ranked 127 and Niemeier was ranked 93.
“I’ve always felt good enough. I’ve won four WTA titles. That’s not easy. I know when I light it up, I can play really well and beat anyone on my day, just like anyone on tour,” said Watson. Still, her performance this year was a great improvement over last year’s Wimbledon when she struggled to make it past first round.
Watson’s streak began with a great win over Tomora Korpatsch. That momentum carried through second and third rounds until she entered the Round of 16. Watson lost her first set against Neimeier, but things looked promising in the second. She started off with a hold and an early break to put her up 2-0. But at that point, Watson began double faulting and hitting numerous unforced errors. Before she knew it she, she was down 4-3. Sadly, when she was losing 4-5, a missed volley ended her Wimbledon this year. Despite feeling disappointed after her loss, she let everyone know that she wasn’t done yet, and that next year she will come back even stronger.
