How to Prevent Heat Stroke During Heat Waves
Do you know what heat waves are? Well, heat waves are scenarios where the temperature is above historical averages for three consecutive days.
Before a heat wave, you should drink 3/4 of a gallon of water each day. You can check that you are getting enough water by noting your urine color. Dark yellow might indicate you are not drinking enough and are dehydrated. You should also avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks. Also, if you are sweating a lot, you should combine water with snacks or a sports drink to replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. If the weather reports say there might be a heat wave, make sure to talk to your doctor about how to prepare if you have a medical condition or are taking any medications.
During a heat wave, make sure to stay in cool by going to air-conditioned places such as libraries, the gym, and your school! Just make sure not to use electrical fans because they’ll just blow hot air towards you. Wear light, short sleeves and shorts. Take cold showers and limit outdoor activities if possible. If you have to go outdoors, then do it either in the early morning or in the evening, so you don’t overheat.
You should always be prepared for heat waves, especially if you are in a more vulnerable group, including elders and children!
