Harini Logan, a 14-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 2nd, 2022.
The competition took place in National Harbor, Maryland, and started with 229 spellers. Logan made it to the top 12 with ease but had a big setback with the multiple-choice vocabulary round when she was eliminated after the judges said her definition of pullulation was wrong. Luckily, the judges realized her definition was actually right, so she was pulled back into the competition.
Logan was doing great until she had to face the final speller. Even though she spelled 4 words wrong, so did her competitor so they went into a spell-off round. They had to spell as many words as possible in 90 seconds without asking any questions. Her competitor, Raju, spelled 15 words, while she spelled 21. And so, she won. “Honestly, it’s so surreal, this is such a dream,” she said.
