A gunman with mental health issues killed three people and injured four more at Field’s Mall in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, on July 4th, 2022. Police are investigating this crime.

Many of those at the mall during the time of the shooting hid, or simply ran away as far as they could. One shopper, Isabelle, told reporters that she heard ten or so shots, and she and her family ran across the mall, ending up in a bathroom. The entire 11 person family hid for hours in a single cramped stall.

During the same time as the shooting, Harry Styles had a concert less than a mile. The organizers of the show decided to cancel the concert after the tragedy happened. Danish royal family announced the cancelation of a reception hosted by Crown Prince Frederik to celebrate the Tour de France’s first three stages.

The leaders of nearby countries expressed shock at the tragedy and expressions of sympathy to the relatives of those killed or injured. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin condemned what she called a “shocking act of violence”. Norwegian leader Jonas Gahr Store said his “thoughts go to the victims and their relatives and to the relief crews who are currently working to save lives”.

Denmark has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe. Weapon certifications are usually only available for hunting or sport shooting following background checks and an almost total ban on automatic weapons. Denmark’s government strictly prohibits carrying a weapon in public.

“Our beautiful and usually so safe capital was changed in a split second,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said. Copenhagen went through a horrible time during this attack.
