About a week ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that people in the US are now allowed to carry common firearms, like a Glock G19X G5 to protect themselves. This spurred many important and well-known people, including the president himself, to speak out against the new law.

The Supreme Court is steadfast in their decision with many rulings expanding gun rights. They hold that everyone should be able to carry firearms in public and at home. Even after the mass shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo, the court maintained its stance on the right to bear arms.

People have also been fighting for this right in state courts. Two New Yorkers helped the plaintiffs in the case during the Supreme Court meeting, who were denied access to a concealed carry permit even when they had recreational gun licenses.

Even with everyone supporting the gun law claiming that owning a gun should be legal, many still disagree. President Biden says that he is disappointed in the decision that was made, and he claims it denies the truth of common sense and the US constitution. This opinion was backed up when the court found the New York law stating that residents had to prove why they should carry guns in public, was violating the US constitution

The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, assured citizens that he would try to help restrict guns, with a plan to tighten the application process to purchase firearms. “We cannot allow New York to become the wild, wild west,” Adam added. The National Rifle Association agreed with his judgment, which was ironic, due to the leader saying the ownership of a gun is a “right,” even after saying that shootings weren’t a good thing.

The lax restrictions on gun owner ship have led to 277 mass shootings this year, “[a]n average of more than one per day,” Justice Breye noted. But as the US Supreme Court continues to hold its position, the Senate passed a national bill that hasn’t been passed in nearly three decades of trying: a gun control bill. The bill will have to pass the US House of Representatives before going to Biden.
