Recently, the United States Supreme Court decided to allow civilians to carry concealed firearms in public, bypassing a 109-year-old New York law with six votes out of nine, all from the conservative justices.
Every year, 40,000 Americans die because of guns. According to the American Journal of Medicine, out of all high-income countries, the United States has the highest number of gun-related homicide and suicide deaths, and the highest ratio of gun-related suicides to non-gun-related suicides.
The Supreme Court made this decision based on the Second Amendment of the U. S. Constitution, which reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
On Thursday, June 23, 2022, the U. S. Senate passed the first gun control bill in 28 years. 65 out of 98 members, and 15 Republicans, voted for the bill, which included improving background checks for gun owners under 21 years old.
Conservatives argue that guns should be treated similarly to automobiles, including giving insurance to accidents and considering how trustworthy the gun owner is. But, liberals say that cars are most often used for transportation, whereas guns are only used for killing.
However, according to the Pew Research Center, 67 percent of gun owners say they use their guns for protection. Criminals are more often killed or wounded each year by armed citizens instead of the police, which suggests that guns are the most effective way to protect someone from crime.
22 percent of gun owners who use their guns for protection actually report to have fired a gun or threatened to fire a gun for protection.
It is more likely for gun owners to be white, male, and conservative. Non-gun-owners tend to support gun safety precautions more than gun owners, and conservatives tend to support the right to own guns.
