On July 21, 2022, a giant panda named An An was euthanized due to severe health
problems.
An An was a male panda living in Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. He died at the age of
35 years. One year for pandas is equivalent to roughly three for humans. That
means, An An lived for 105 human years!
According to the New York Times, An An had been sick for weeks. He could not
eat and he had problems moving around.
An An usually consumes 30 pounds of bamboo daily. However, in the last few days
of his life, he stopped eating solid food and only drank water and special
electrolytes for animals.
Seeing no chance of his survival, Park officials, veterinarians and the China
Conservation and Research Center decided to put him down. Dr. Paolo Martelli,
Director of Veterinary Services at Ocean Park, performed the procedure at An
An’s park residence, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures.
After the park released the news through its Facebook page, many people
mourned the loss of An An.. The chairman of the Ocean Park Corporation, Paulo
Pong, saying in a news release on Thursday that An An had “brought us fond
memories with numerous heartwarming moments. His cleverness and playfulness
will be dearly missed.”
