This is new to me.” Last season, Harper had missed only a couple of games from a fastball to the face, but that injury was much less severe, as Harper himself put it, “I can take [a 98-mph pitch] to the face, but I can’t take 97 to the thumb.” as he attempted to laugh off the thumb injury.
The injury happened in the fourth inning of a game against the San Diego Padres. As the pitch came in, he checked the swing – which means he aimed for the ball, but didn’t completely follow through, so it wouldn’t be a strike –, and as he was leaning away, the pitch caught his thumb, breaking his bones in an instant. He immediately fell down in obvious pain as the Phillies trainer Paul Buccheit ran out to take a look at him. Dave Dombriwski, the team’s general manager, said that he would need surgery.
As Harper was leaving the field, he made many disgusting comments to the Padres pitcher Blake Snell. Meanwhile, Snell tried to maintain his innocence, telling everyone that it was unintentional. Just a few moments later, Harper cooled down, as he told the pitcher he didn’t balme him, saying “I know, I know. ”
“It wasn’t heated at all,” Harper said. “It was just the moment and a crappy situation. I’ve been playing against Blake since we were 10, 11 years old, so I know there was no ill will behind that at all. The inside pitch is part of the game. He is a great player and a great human being as well. I wish him the best, and I told him to keep throwing that inside fastball because it sets up that slider really good.”
