The famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s life story has been the center of attention in performances, movies, museums, shirts, and bags. But even considering the amount of the story that has been used, the producers of the Frida musical are still determined to make their performance unique.
Announced on Thursday, Frida Kahlo’s life is going to be made into a musical releasing in 2024. The performance will follow Kahlo’s life all the way from Mexico City, to Paris, to New York, and back to the “Blue House” where Kahlo was born and died in 1954. The show will be titled “Frida, The Musical” and it will try to offer a new look at Kahlo’s life.
“In all the stories I heard when I was a little child, our family remembered Aunt Frida as a very joyful woman,” said Kahlo’s niece, Mara Romeo Kahlo. Even though the artist is shown as a feminist icon, and art historians focus on her mental and physical suffering, the musical is supposed to see her from a wider perspective.
The playwright, Beber, is excited about capturing a different side of Kahlo, a more funny and playful side than the sad side that is usually shown. To Beber, even though there seems to be endless content about her doesn’t mean Kahlo’s life shouldn’t be highlighted. She compared the artist to Shakespeare “why are people still finding ways to make Hamlet interesting?” she said.
The producer, Berger, visited the Kahlo family in Mexico to gain more insight into the family and Frida. She even said the Kahlo sisters were the “Kardashians of Mexico.” She also learned more about Frida and the songs she sang and the crazy stories she would tell.
“She is such an inspiration, not only as an artist but also as a warrior,” the composer for the show said. “As a Mexican, to be telling this story and bringing this authenticity to the show, I feel really honored.”
