On Thursday, it was announced that there would be a Broadway musical on the life of the iconic Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. The show, called “Frida, the Musical” is scheduled to open in 2024, after the Broadway regional tryouts next year. It will feature music from Jaime Lorenzo, lyrics by Neena Beber and it will be produced by Valentina Berger.
People often focus on Frida’s emotional and physical suffering, but the producers of “Frida, the Musical” want to look at her life from a “wider perspective”. The musical will include personal stories and untold details in Frida’s life.
“Everyone knows a colder Frida, a suffering Frida, but she loved life,” Berger said. “She was really, really fun. That’s what we want to portray. I used to have a sad view of Frida, like, ‘Oh, the poor woman.’ Now, knowing how she was so smart and so clever, I look up to her.”
There have been many musicals, songs and plays written about Frida, this is the only one that her family has signed off on so far.
“In all the stories I heard when I was a little child, our family remembered Aunt Frida as a very joyful woman,” said Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida Kahlo’s grand-niece. “She was passionate about music, arts and Mexican culture. ‘Frida, The Musical’ honors everything she was: a real woman who fought for her dreams, loved like anybody else and always lived ahead of her time.”
