Francesca Woodman is a talented photographer who is known for taking black and white pictures of herself female models. Sadly, she died at the age of 22. Long after her death at the age of 22, her creations are still memorized by people today, and her own art exhibit.

I really like the art Francesca Woodman created; she is an expert at using shadows to form a certain meaning. But why does she photograph herself posing nude in a cemetery or disordered, abandoned house? Is there a special meaning she wants the audience to know, or it is a feminist performance? Or this is all an early sign of her death?

After almost 60 years, her drawing remains a riddling for people. Just like the image on the left, the dark shadowing, the rusty house with dust, and a half-opening door made this image look like a horror movie. The girl standing in front of the door, staring at the camera. Why isn’t she scared, what is the girl trying to tell us? Her hands are separated, one up and one down. She is pointing at the dark door as if there is something the girl wants to know that is behind the dark shadow. Looking closer, there is a slight blur at the end of the dress, is Francesca trying to tell us that the girl is not normal. Or it is just a glitch in the camera? The girl does not seem to be going into the door, but the expression on her face is trying to lead whoever is there into the door. Why does Francesca Woodman create this image? What is she trying to tell?

The next image is called “On Being an Angel.” In the photo, she is posing her head backward, staring at the camera, also flipping the image upside-down. The shadow around her is dark, which highly contrasted her body in the photo. Francesca Woodman trying to show the intermediate figure of an angel. She is staring up is like showing an angel being sent to the earth and desires to go back to “heaven.” Is she trying to tell us about her frustration in working? Is she trying to show her misery?
