Former president Donald Trump criticized the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) tour, threatening to cancel the sponsorship last Thursday in Bedminster NJ. Instead, he was praising the alternative LIV tournaments.
Earlier in the year, the 2022 PGA tour championships was supposed to be held at the Bedminster Club, but because of the January 6th attack at the Capitol Hill, the event was moved to Oklahoma. The Bedminster club holds over 54 holes and is the PGA tour’s third biggest event. Some players that have rebelled against the profitable tour have since resigned or been suspended from the PGA tour. On the other hand, golfers that are enrolled in LIV still have the rights to play in the four major tournaments which to some extent is not held by PGA.
Dressed in a white golf shirt and with his favorite red baseball cap, Trump gave a short speech at the Trump National Golf Club and demanded that the PGA tournament be cancelled. “The PGA was hatred by many of the golf players enrolled,” Trump claimed. “Now they have an alternative and nobody ever would have known it was going to be a gold rush, like this.”
LIV tournaments may provide higher prizes too according to Trump. “I think nobody ever knew that they were going to be paying signing bonuses. The prize money was going to be much higher…Instead of a million dollars you win five or seven or eight. A lot of money and it’s even going up. But the PGA Tour hasn’t acted well,” Trump said.
Trump is scheduled to compete in a golf match on Thursday which involves his son Eric Trump, professional golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson, and Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head in sovereign wealth fund in Saudi Arabia. “I’ll never feel like a long hitter with that group,” Trump said.
