On November 25, 2020, football legend Diago Maradona died from a heart attack in his house in Dique Luján, Argentina, at the age of 60. Just a few weeks before his death, he had surgery for his brain and a blood clot. A judge will try eight Doctors for Maradona’s death after a medical panel found that Maradona’s treatment may have been mismanaged.

Last year, a panel of 20 specialists appointed to examine Maradona’s death found that his medical team acted reckless and irresponsible. They also concluded that Maradona would have had a better chance of survival with appropriate treatment and medical facilities. All eight doctors can face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.

One of the eight doctors, Dr. Luque, was interviewed about this situation and said that he had done everything to save his friend’s life. During the interview, he shot back at the reporters: “[y]ou want to know what I am responsible for? For having loved him, for having taken care of him, for having extended his life, for having improved it to the end.”

Two of Maradona’s daughters submitted complaints that could lead to legal proceedings. They raised concerns about their father’s treatment quality after his brain surgery.

Mario Baudry, one of Maradona’s son’s lawyers, said, “As soon as I saw the cause, I said it was a homicide. I fought for a long time, and here we are, with this stage completed.”

Maradona’s death shocked the football world to its core. Many people would wait hours just to walk past Maradona’s coffin and give prayers and shed tears.

Thousands of people poured into the presidential palace to give their prayers and respects to the football legend. The loss of Maradona is far earlier than anybody wanted it to be, but we will never forget the football legend Diego Armando Maradona Franco.
