Florida had decided not to let kids have the coronavirus vaccine; however, the U.S. government and healthcare professionals argued with this decision, pressuring Governor Ron DeSantis to reverse his decision.
Governor Ron chose not to preorder the vaccine for children under five. He claimed that young children were healthier and were unlikely to get the virus. He stated, “I would say we are affirmatively against the Covid vaccine for young kids…who have zero risk of getting anything.” Not only did he refuse to preorder for children, but he also didn’t allow health-care workers to preorder the vaccines before the deadline. Therefore, the first batch of shipments that were scheduled for Monday didn’t arrive at the doctors’ offices in Florida. In addition, Florida failed to preorder the second batch of doses, also missing the shipment that came in a week later.
After insistence from higher authorities and health-care professionals, Florida began to allow children’s hospitals and other facilities to order the coronavirus vaccines for young children. Despite the change, Gov. Ron insisted that the state had not abandoned its original opinion. He stated that he didn’t change his mind because of the pressure he received, but because the vaccine for children five and under was now approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This allowed young children to finally start receiving the vaccinations beginning the following week.
