In an online ceremony live streamed from Helsinki, Finland last Tuesday, four accomplished mathematicians received the Fields Medals, an award given to skillful mathematicians under the age 40 by the International Congress at the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every four years.

The four mathematicians given the medal were Hugo Duminil-Copin, 36, June Huh, 39, James Maynard, 35, and Maryna Viazovska, 37.

Dr. Viazovska is the second woman in history to be awarded the Fields Medal after Maryam Mirzakhani, who was awarded in 2014. Viazovska discovered a solution to eight dimensions, a mathematic possibility of packing of twenty-four dimensions.

Dr. Huh, meanwhile, was inspired by a computer chess game he played when he was in middle school. When he was in his last year of college, he was taught algebraic geometry that would be one of the keys to his success in receiving the Fields Medal.

Dr. Maynard spent years trying to solve an unsolved mathematical problem known as the Twin Prime Conjecture, and he eventually finally found a way to explain the problem.

Dr. Duminil-Copin, on the other hand, was torn between math and physics, and so decided to focus on matter and phase transitions, which is the changing of matter from one form to another.

All of the four mathematicians are role models to kids who love math and science.
