On July 31, it was reported that FBI failures before the Capital Siege occurred because of their ignorant reaction to the January 6 House Committee. This inactive decision was made because the FBI thought that it might leave them with more resources in the future.
The 75 reporters uncovered in interviews with more than 230 people, thousands of riots, thousands of pages of documents, and hundreds of videos proving how many warnings were ignored.
“The red flags were everywhere,” said the Washington Post. In the weeks leading to January 6, the FBI and other agencies also received a gargantuan number of tips. But they were all ignored.
But the FBI failed to catch on. They gave many reasons why: nothing they saw suggested possible violence on January 6, and they didn’t have sufficient visibility.
FBI leaders also repeatedly told Congress that the Constitution “tied their hands,” preventing them from doing anything that they weren’t at the time.
Either way, this situation could not be let go too easily. Rather than one mistake, this was a series of errors: one of the biggest security failures in history.
“The paralysis that led to one of the biggest security failures in the nation’s history was driven by unique breakdowns inside each law enforcement agency and was exacerbated by the patchwork nature of security across a city where responsibilities are split between local and federal authorities,” details the Post.
At a Senate Judiciary hearing in March, Senator Amy Klobuchar interviewed FBI Director Christopher Wray, asking specific questions about the riot.
“There must be moments where you think. ‘If we would have known. If we could have infiltrated this group, or found out what they were doing,” Klobuchar said. “Do you have those moments?”
“Absolutely,” Wray responded. “I will tell you, senator, and this is something I feel passionately about: Any time there’s an attack, our standard at the FBI is, we aim to bat a thousand.”
