“I cannot see my pores anywhere,” one TikToker said, stating that the lotion makes her skin appear “super matte.” She includes evidence that her skin and makeup has been staying put during the summer and 12-hour workdays because of this special lotion.
However, there are several people who are dissatisfied with the results, and the routines that other influences are promoting.
Medical professionals, dermatologists, and doctors are concerned for the people using calamine lotion on their face because there are several negative consequences to doing so.
“It just doesn’t make sense to use calamine lotion and risk drying out the skin and damaging the skin barrier,” Azadeh Shirazi told The Washington Post, a dermatologist practicing in the San Diego area.
This dermatologist-issued statement may be helpful in the long run, but for now, it’s too late. TikTokers are already obsessed with this new beauty substance.
Dr. Shirazi felt compelled to post another statement about the dangers of calamine lotion.
“Calamine lotion is made up of zinc oxide, ferric oxide, and phenol. Zinc oxide is an astringent that can help absorb excess oil and have a mattifying effect,” Shirazi said. She also said that calamine is generally used to treat oozing wounds from infections such as chickenpox and monkeypox, as well as soothing insect bites, pimples, rashes, and poison ivy.
When she realized that her second message still didn’t cause a change in the influencer beauty community, she made her own TikTok account, “skinbydrazi.” Through this account, she has caught the attention of millions of followers. Her followers turn to her for medical advice, and she is often times tagged in other skin care posts.
