CRICKET RETURNING AS AN OLYMPIC SPORT DURING THE 2028 SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES
After 128 years, Cricket is returning to the 2028 Olympics in LA.
The last time cricket was played in the Olympics was in 1900 in Paris. The games consisted of only one match, a match between France and Britain, which the British won.
This time, cricket will be played in a new short format, known as T20, or Twenty20. In this format, each team plays 20 overs, or 120 balls, to score runs. Whichever team has more runs, wins. Typically, this version of cricket lasts about three hours. There are many big hits in this version, such as fours and sixes, making it easier to enjoy.
This time, there will be only six countries playing, with six men’s teams and six women’s teams. There will be one team from each big area. The teams would likely be India, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and the United States. Meanwhile, the last spot will go to the team that wins a special tournament, possibly New Zealand, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. Another possibility is a country from the West Indies, although they will have to participate in a regional tournament among themselves to qualify for the tournament .
The cricket tournament will take place from July 12 to July 29, 2028, in Fairplex Stadium in Pomona. In the first phase, the teams will be split into two groups of three, with the best team with the best scores proceeding to the finals. The women’s finals will occur on July 20th, 2028, while the men’s finals will occur on July 29th, 2028.
The reintroduction of cricket to the Olympics will pave a new road for the sport to continue growing. If the tournament proves worthy, cricket may go on to become a permanent Olympic Sport.
