The Heat Wave
At 8:00 AM in the summer, I woke up to showers of sweat since it was extremely hot and tons of kids screaming and playing outside. Looking out the window, I saw that these kids were in swimsuits, sliding and playing in inflatable water sets. Jenny, my 8-year-old younger sister, was playing in her favorite swimsuit with the other girls on the water-spraying bounce house the neighbors let us borrow. It was sunny, and my Alexa told me it was 107 degrees. I was really jealous of my sister at that moment. I looked like I just took a shower, while Jenny was cooling off and having fun with friends out there in cold water. Dad was at work with his friends. Mom did chores as usual and then relaxed. How am I supposed to cool off?
I immediately sprang out of bed and changed into my thin, cooling summer vest. Then, I immediately went into the living room and lay under the fan. I saw my mom making pancakes at the kitchen counter. She was also dressed in clothes that made her feel cooler. “Mom,” I began, “You know that Jenny is playing outside…right?”
“Yes, Juliet. I can see you want to play as well. But the kids out there are small and immature 8-year-olds! You are already 12. You shouldn’t be playing with people like them.”
“I know, Mom. What can I do, then?”
“I know. You can pick out a movie on Netflix to watch on TV. Grab a beanbag chair and sit next to the fan. I will make something to let you cool down.”
“Ok, I can watch ANY movie, right?”
“Yeah, make sure it is appropriate.”
“Duh.”
I chose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as my movie, because I read the Harry Potter series and the Deathly Hallows was great. It was long, with lots of magical outbursts! It was also pretty popular, and I have watched this a few times. Still, it is my favorite. I loved to watching it!
I grabbed the beanbag chair from my room. It was shaped like a couch and very fuzzy. It looked and was very clean since it was white. When I put it next to the fan, I saw a little cloth below the fan – it had icy mango raspberry lemonade on the cloth. Beside the cup of lemonade was my favorite breakfast combo: pancakes with fresh fruit and chocolate syrup on a china plate. Mom was outside to check on Jenny, so I started the movie without her.
The movie was long but amazing. It was fascinating and interesting, with funny problems and magical happenings. After this 2-hour movie, Mom came in with Jenny, who was wrapped in a long, pink towel and pouting. She pouted since she wanted to play some more. Mom said she had to eat some breakfast. Afterwards, Jenny would be able to go out again. Jenny said, “Then, give me something to eat! I will gobble it up and play!”
“Okay, Jenny. I will make you your favorite food in the world: bubble waffles with whipped cream!”
Jenny’s eyes lit up and widened. “Really? Is it ready?”
“Yup, it is in the fridge, fresh and cold!”
Jenny immediately grabbed the plate of food and ate quickly. She seemed satisfied. Not even a moment later, she was outside with the other girls again.
“Mom, I am finished with the movie,” I said.
“Great! Do you want to play UNO?”
“Sure!”
We went to the dining room, turned on the chandelier, and settled down for one short round of UNO. We carried the fan over as well. “Okay, so it looks like we can start. The cards are sorted and stacked.”
“Okay…I will start.” I started with a disadvantage that round. like +4s. To begin the game, I put down a blue 4, to begin the game but Mom had tons of good cards. So, I needed to draw lots of cards. When Mom almost ran out of cards and won, I put down the only 3 cards that were +4s in my stash, and I was out of cards. I won!
After that, it was already 2:00. It was time for lunch! I ate a filling chicken salad, and asked Mom if I could go to my friend Pansy’s house. She said yes, so I rode my teal and pink bike to her house, which was only about two blocks away. It was in the afternoon rather than the morning out there. When I rang the doorbell, a wave of chilly and calming air greeted me as Pansy opened the door. “Hi!” She said. She looked very pleased to see me.
“Hey, Pansy. It is really hot. Why aren’t you wearing your thinnest clothes?”
“It is really cold in my house. I think somebody blasted the air-conditioning – I can’t get it to go back to normal.”
“No problem, I am hot, so that works for me. You are in these, well, winter clothes, so that may work for you. Can I come in? I am basically melted chocolate.”
“Come in, I am bored to death, nobody is home.”
When I went into her house, I sat right on the couch next to her rag doll kitten. It was white, cute, and very sweet. It enjoyed guests. Pansy and I watched our favorite YouTube channels and made crafts. We ended our day with some crocheting. Before I left, Pansy’s dad got home and greeted us with a cheerful grin. “Hey. Juliet, did you have dinner yet? I have some ice cream and pizza. You can have dinner with us.”
“Sure, I will have dinner with you. I am very hungry!”
We ate dinner, followed by dessert. I said goodbye to Pansy and walked home. It was already 9:40, so it was time for bed in 20 minutes. I went home, hugged Mom, and helplessly dragged my feet into my room. I was so tired I accidentally put on my pajamas inside-out, and then started to sleep. I wish tomorrow would be like Jenny’s day — playing at a water park. Or, maybe it can be like Pansy’s day, with a blasted but comforting air conditioner and a friend over.
