Additional Bodies Found in Copper Mine Collapse in Chile
A large earthquake last week in Chile collapsed a copper mine, trapping workers. The death toll as of Sunday, August 3rd, has now risen to six.
This accident was determined to be caused by an earthquake measuring in at a magnitude 5 on the Richter Scale. Because of the sudden occurrence of this incident, proper safety precautions could not be taken.
Codelco, the mining enterprise associated with the mining location, has been cooperating with rescue efforts. According to the article, this news brought about widespread attention.
In response to the incident, Codelco has stated, “We share the anguish this situation causes their families and the entire community.”
Some rescue workers who are involved in the copper mine rescue were also part of rescue efforts during the 2010 Atacama Desert operation, where 33 miners had been trapped.
Rescue efforts have been made more difficult due to repeat aftershocks.
