Dune is one of the most popular and influential science fiction series ever written. The author is Frank Herbert, and the first book of Dune came out in August 1965. Many movies have come out based on the Novel Dune.
The book Dune is part of a Series with six books starting with Dune and ending with Dune Chapterhouse. After Frank Herbert’s death, his son Brian Herbert and Author Kevin J. Anderson worked to create more books based on the series Dune. In the end, they succeeded to write 20 more books, after the 6 that Frank Herbert wrote.
I think the reason why many people have a hard time reading and understanding Dune is because of the way Frank Herbert writes. The book Dune introduces a massive universe where there is a new culture, planet, economics, creatures and many different things. He made a whole new universe and terms that the reader has to learn and understand while reading the book. It is just not a few things that are different, it is new phrases and these things that he does not tell you what they are.
For instance , Shai-Hulud is another word for sand worm. The reader does not know what Shai-Hulud is and what a sand worm is. So while reading the book he has to learn and understand what that is without the book explaining. Frank Herbert has a unique way of writing that is kind of like a riddle so you do not fully understand what it means.
For example:
Jessica: “This is not a time to play the cynic, my dear. It is a time to be prepared — to expect the worst and do more than hope for the best.”
Leto: “I don’t want to believe that.”
Jessica: “Then you are blind.”
When you read you don’t really understand this. You would understand it if someone said, “ I will go eat an apple.” I think about this and it really gets to me. If it is hard for us to understand it, how hard would it be for Frank Herbert to actually write it? This is not a one time thing he writes this way so i feel like there would be a lot of thinking going into this.
While I listened to the audiobook Dune, these hard riddle-like sentences got to me. I wouldn’t understand what it meant but just as quickly as it came, some different sentences would appear and I would not understand that either.
I am currently on the fourth book. I now understand these terms and new words that the author put into the the book quickly. Even if new terms and people come out in every book I can quickly understand what it is. It was cool that this whole series goes through thousands of years and generations after generations. When I started this series I did not understand these new words and what they meant, but after a few books started I understood what they were so it became more fun and interesting. Even if it is hard to understand, I would totally recommend this book!
Word Count: 514
P.S I had so many things I wanted to write about and explain about what I felt, but I see I feel like I couldn’t really explain it in the right way so that you could understand. Yeah, I got to work on that.
