On June 27, a 25-year-old Black man was killed when eight officers fired at him. Now, newly released body-camera footage shows the man was unarmed and running away from officers.
Officers in Akron, Ohio’s North Hill neighborhood attempted to pull over Jayland Walker on June 27 at about 12:30 a.m. for a traffic violation and an equipment violation with his car. Police said he allegedly refused to stop, setting off a chase that eventually resulted in his death.
During a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Police Chief Steve Mylett joined the Walker family in calling for patience as the investigation continues in the man’s death. Mylett began the conference by expressing his “deepest sympathies to Jayland’s family,” saying, “I cannot imagine the sense of loss, the pain they are going through right now. I want to personally thank you for the way in which you have been dealing with this situation.”
Before showing the footage, Horrigan said he was “beyond outraged” at the situation and told reporters that “the video you are about to watch is heartbreaking.”
Police played footage from two body cameras, with the first showing officers pursuing Walker’s silver Buick onto Route 8 in Akron. The video showed the Buick taking an onramp and a flash of light that Mylett said appeared to be the muzzle flash of a gun coming from the driver’s side of Walker’s car.
The second body-camera video recorded officers saying that they heard at least one shot that was fired from Walker’s car. The video then shows the officer following the Buick off Route 8 and continuing the chase on side streets.
At one point, Walker slowed down and jumped out of his car. The video showed a man, who police claim was Walker, exiting the car wearing a ski mask. Multiple officers are then seen running after Walker as officers fired their weapons towards him.
The chief said he is reserving further comment on the footage and judgment on the incident until the Ohio Bureau of Investigation completes its analysis.
