Along with over 3,000 other purebred canines vying for the prize, stately bloodhound Trumpet competed in Westminster’s 146th Kennel Club Dog Show. Not only did the 4-year old hound emerge victorious, but he is the first of his breed to do so.

In the Westminster dog show, victory is awarded to the dog that represents its breed most ideally. It is typically held in Madison Square Garden in New York City, but due to pandemic-related reasons, the location was moved to Lyndhurst. Even the Empire State Building lit up purple in honor of the event.

For a breed that lacks the visual appeal and surplus of charisma found in other dogs, such as fluffy Samoyeds or petite malteses, gaining recognition can be difficult. For Trumpet, however, championship runs in the family. After all, his great grandfather, Tigger, once achieved a Guinness world record for the dog with the longest ears. Furthermore, the incredible dog “exudes the quiet confidence of a born champion,” according to reporter Matt Flegenheimer.

Other contenders for Best-In-Show included Striker, a big-hearted Samoyed, a German shepherd by the name of River, and a French bulldog named Winston, who took second place. However, they were no match for Trumpet and his confident, composed manner. As he was the first ever bloodhound to win a competition of this sort, Trumpet is truly something special. “You know, I feel like sometimes a bloodhound might be a little bit of an underdog. So I was absolutely thrilled,” says Trumpet’s handler, Heather Buehner.

Even the unrecognized underdogs can take first place in the nation’s most renowned dog shows. It just goes to show that good things can happen when one puts their best foot (or paw) forward.
