Last week at the Budapest 2022 World Aquatics Championship, Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus’s alarming absence left fans shocked and allowed US swimmer Katie Ledecky to leave everyone else in the dust.

Over the past few seasons, Titmus has solidified her name as one of the top swimmers in the world. Last month, she broke the world record for the fastest time in the 400m freestyle swim. In addition, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Titmus took the title for the 200m and 400m, beating her formidable rival Katie Ledecky. Despite rising to the top and becoming Ledecky’s greatest opponent, Titmus boldly decided to skip the most important meet of the season because she didn’t need to be there.

Ariarne Titmus broke Katie Ledecky’s world record for the 400m freestyle by just 0.06s at last month’s 2022 Australian Swimming Championships.

While the world’s best swimmers are racing at the World Championships, Titmus uses this time to focus on herself and prepare for the Olympics. In an interview, she confirmed that, “[she] just really wanted to think about the long term… which for [her] is the Olympic Games.” Although fans were looking forward to another Ledecky vs. Titmus showdown, Titmus is focusing on the bigger picture: the 2024 Paris Olympics. Titmus’s decision reflects her unwavering determination for the ultimate goal and confirms her firm resolve to take home the gold in 2024.

Titmus’s coach, Dean Boxall has reaffirmed Titmus’s decision to miss the World Championships. Titmus and her team are well aware of the anticipation over another head-to-head encounter between Ledecky and Titmus. However, her coach confirmed that this was an informed decision and is part of Titmus’s long-term career. In an interview, Boxall stated that “The inner sanctum has a plan. She knows what she needs to do. She knows it’s all about the Olympics.”

While the chance of an epic rivalry between Ledecky and Titmus has been missed at this year’s world, there are certainly more competitions in the future where the two swimmers will race. Given Titmus’s dedication to the Olympics, fans will certainly see them compete on the world’s greatest stage in 2024.
