On Tuesday, June 26, 2022, the National Football League (NFL) announced that Cleveland Brown Quarterback Deshaun Watson will receive a minimum one-year suspension in front of the sport’s new disciplinary officer for sexual misconduct.
He has 24 civil lawsuits, ranging from sexual misconduct to assault, all reported from women that may have been victims of this behavior. Although Watson is not facing any criminal charges, based on two individual grand juries in Texas, he is still facing punishment for violating the policy of the NFL.
This trial could end in two ways. It greatly depends on the ruling of the U.S. district judge, the disciplinary officer appointed by the NFL and NFLPA, Sue L. Robinson.
If Robinson claims that Watson is guilty of the charges, he could be facing punishment from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, or another person responsible for making decisions. If Robinson rules that Watson is innocent, then the case would end, with no appeal, meaning that there will be no further trials.
After hearing all the other possible testimonies, to understand his perspective on the case, the Browns Quarterback was interviewed. He proceeded to claim that he was not at fault.
“I’ve been honest, and I’ve been truthful,” said Watson. “I never forced anyone, I never assaulted anyone. I’ve been saying it from the beginning, and I’m gonna continue to do that until all the facts come out.”
Although Watson was not permitted to play the previous season, he was not suspended and was paid his salary, in whole, of $1.035 million for the season of 2022 and a guaranteed $230 million from a five-year contract he signed with them.
Despite all the people, including his own teammates, going against him, Watson remains firm in his beliefs. He is convinced that there is still some kind of chance that he will be set free from all these allegations.
