What is Happening at the Protests in Minneapolis?
In the city of Minneapolis in America, huge protests about the government crackdown on immigration are currently taking place. In December of last year, the government sent teams of immigration officers to the city with the aim of finding and removing people who have come to America illegally or have stayed longer than they were allowed. Solving immigration issues was one of the President Trump’s big promises, when he won the US Presidential Election.
The protestors are angry about how harshly the ICE agents are cracking down too. The agents that were sent to Minneapolis, and other US cities, are teams of ICE officers. ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The ICE enforces immigration laws, and investigates people that are suspected to be in the US illegally. ICE agents have the power to stop, or hold and arrest, people they suspect.
A lot of people in Minneapolis have protested ICE, that have carried out operations. Some people film ICE agents as they carry out arrests and sound alarms to let people know that the agents are coming in the neighborhood. America has also seen protests in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Austin.
Some encounters between ICE agents and protestors have been so violent that, in Minneapolis, two protesters have been killed! That has led more protesters to be mad.
The state’s Governor Tim Waltz has told the president to remove ICE immediately. President Donald Trump says he is “reviewing everything”.
Even some members of Donald Trump’s government have been very mad about the protestors, this include the people who have been killed. The President is saying that the protesters are stopping officers doing their work.
