On the Banks of Plum Creek
On the Banks of Plum Creek is an amazing, touching, and interesting novel by Laura Ingalls Wilder for kids. It is based on the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the 1870s. The novel was also recognized as a Newbery Honor book in 1938.
This novel is a lot like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood, since the book also says Laura has siblings and lives in the country. It covers the years when Laura’s family lived near Plum Creek in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, in the 1870s. There are a few fictional characters, like the spoiled and rude Nellie Oleson, but in real life, Nellie’s name is Nellie Owens. Nellie Oleson has been boastful to Laura in the book since Nellie’s father owns a shop and Nellie can have basically whatever she wants.
In On the Banks of Plum Creek, Laura Ingalls has an older sister named Mary, who is a good girl. Laura also has a younger sister named Carrie, who was just an innocent baby. Laura’s mother cooks and entertains the kids with things like games, while Laura’s father does chores like milking the cattle at the stable.
In this novel, Laura Ingalls also witnesses situations that have brought challenges to her family – a ginormous Locust Plague of 1874 destroys their wheat crop, meaning they cannot harvest any wheat. It also ruins the chance for a good crop next year. Another thing that Laura witnessed was very sad and worrying. Her father went east to do a job and make money, but a blizzard hit and lasted four days. That blizzard delayed Laura’s father’s arrival home.
This is an extremely interesting and fun book for kids. Laura Ingalls Wilder did an awesome job writing this book, so that kids reading will be unstoppably turning the pages of this thought-provoking novel. This novel, On the Banks of Plum Creek, is one of my favorite books.
