Blackpink is Finally Back After Three Years

On July 11th, K-pop group Blackpink announced their return with a new single called “Jump,” as well as the 2025 Deadline world tour. Three years ago, the group released their last major album before going on a hiatus, where the members focused more on solo projects. Known for their global popularity, Blackpink is celebrating their ninth anniversary tomorrow, marking their debut on August 8, 2016.
Even from the beginning, Blackpink was breaking records with their debut single album Square One, which included hits “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” The former topped South Korean charts, while the latter reached #1 on Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart, both remarkable feats for a debut group.
Two years after debuting, Blackpink released their first mini-album, Square Up, with “Ddu-du Ddu-du” as the lead single. This song peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest charting song for a K-pop girl group at the time. In the same year, they released their first collaboration, “Kiss and Make Up,” featuring Dua Lipa. This bilingual song became a role-model for international collaborations with its energetic vibe and incredible vocals.
In 2019, Blackpink performed at Coachella, becoming the first K-pop girl group to do so in 20 years of history. They also released their second mini-album, called Kill This Love. The lead single, with the same name as the album, broke several YouTube records, including most views in 24 hours and fastest to 100 million views.
A year later, Blackpink released their first full-length album The Album. It reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and was the first million-selling K-pop girl group album. They also released two more celebrity collaborations: “Sour Candy” with Lady Gaga and “Ice Cream” with Selena Gomez.
Blackpink’s second studio album, Born Pink, was released in 2022 and made it to #1 on the Billboard 200. This marked yet another record for the K-pop girl group, as they were the first to achieve this. The world tour following this album also became the highest-grossing tour in the history of female groups.
After the tour, Blackpink’s group contract expired, and they embarked on three-year solo journeys in music and acting. However, this clearly has not affected their popularity as a group in any way, as their new single release “Jump” topped Billboard’s Global Excl. US charts. So, as this shows, old dogs really can learn new tricks (or songs).
