Following the death of Argentine football star Diego Maradona, a judge has ordered a trial after prosecutors launched an investigation and found his final treatment to be full of “deficiencies and irregularities.” Eight doctors who treated Maradona are facing criminal charges of negligent homicide.

In 2020, Maradona died of a heart attack in his own home at the age of 60. Many fans mourned the great Argentinian football player’s death, with thousands of fans paying respects at his coffin over three days of national grief. Maradona’s daughters filed a complaint about their father’s treatment, prompting legal proceedings. Among those being tried are Maradona’s personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, two doctors, two nurses, and their boss. All have denied responsibility for his death.

The investigation launched by the Prosecution found that the player “would have had a better chance of survival” if he received decent treatment in a quality medical facility. Mario Baudrey, a prosecution lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons is confident that there is a dark side to Maradona’s death. In an interview with Reuters, he stated that“[Maradona was] in a situation of helplessness…as soon as I saw the cause, I said it was homicide.”

Dr. Luque cried during an emotional press conference in November 2020 shortly after Maradona’s death. The doctor said he did “everything he could, up to the impossible” to save the life of a friend.

Even before the heart attack, Maradona’s health was not in good condition. Years of addiction and a grueling brain surgery deteriorated his health. However, in the hearts of fans, 60 was too young for a national hero to go. As the public demands answers behind his death regarding allegations against Maradona’s medical team, the prosecution and defense prepare a trial regarding the greatest Argentine football player of all time.
