On June 26th, a brawl broke out between the Angels and the Mariners following tension from their Saturday night game.
In the first inning, Angels player Andrew Wantz threw a pitch that just missed Julio Rodgrigez’s head. Jesse Winker’s (of the Seattle Mariners) temper flared in the second inning, after Andrew Wantz hit him with a pitch.
“I was pretty amped up for my first start, and the first one just got away from me,” Wantz said. “It was sweaty. I was sweating. First day game I’ve pitched in [in the majors], and that’s that. Second one to Winker was a cut fastball inside, and [I] just yanked it. That’s all I’ve got to say.”
Immediately after what happened in the second inning, both teams rushed out to fight. Anthony Redon, third basemen of the Angels, went over to Winker and gave him a big push in the face. Several players from both teams threw many punches before being stopped by the umpire after 4 minutes.
“Six players and both managers were ejected after the brawl, which resulted in a delay of approximately 18 minutes,” said Espn.com News Service.
The players that were ejected include Andrew Wantz, pitchers Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias, and interim manager Phil Nevin from the Angels. From Seattle were Jesse Winker, Julio Rodgrigez, and shortstop J.P. Crawford
When Winker finally left the field he made unpleasant signs at the jeering Angel fans behind the Mariners dugout.”The only thing I’m going to apologize for is flipping the fans off,” Winker said. “That’s it. As fans, they’re spending their hard-earned money to come watch us play a game, and they didn’t deserve that, so I apologize to the fans, especially the women and children.”
