In the 4×100-meter men’s relay held on Saturday at the World Athletics Championships, the U.S crossed the finish line in 37.55 seconds and won a silver medal, while Canada finished in 37.48 seconds and earned the gold medal.
The U.S team consisted of members Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Elijah Hall, and Marvin Bracy. They were running smoothly until the last moment; Hall couldn’t manage to get the baton to Bracy and stumbled, and Andre de Grasse, who was running for Canada, managed to hold off Bracy and cross the finish line first.
The second-place finish was an even greater disappointment because the women’s relay came on after the men. Melissa Jefferson, Abby Steiner, Jenna Prandini, and Twanisha Terry were on the U.S team and got the baton in about 41.14 seconds, which was the third fastest time ever.
The result came to the audience as a surprise, as Jamaica, who won Olympic gold medals last summer, was expected to win. However, the Jamaican team had a poor first handoff, and that held them back.
