Air India Crash Killed At Least 270 People
On June 12, Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India into a medical college hostel, taking over 270 people’s lives. This was the first fatal crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Although there were over 270 people dead, one man survived, unharmed. The flight was bound for the London Gatwick airport in the UK. , the Prime Minister of India said the situation was “heartbreaking beyond words”.
Although there have been lots of several high–profile crashes these past years, experts in transport say that flying is one of the safest ways to travel. Even at this moment, thousands of planes are flying all over the world without problems.
Even if a plane crashes, governments and airlines investigate the cause and try to prevent it from happening again.
The reason for the crash may be because both General Electric GEnx engines were reducing thrust. The exact cause behind the dual-engine power loss is unknown. Among the 90 identified victims was Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of Gujarat, who will be laid to rest with full state honors in Rajkot city for his political career of over 50 years.
Vishwashkumar Ramesh, the British man who survived the Air India plane crash, escaped through an opening in the fuselage. “I managed to unbuckle myself, used my leg to push through that opening, and crawled out,” he told Indian state media DD News. Air India said 169 Indian nationals and 52 British nationals were killed but over 200 bodies have been recovered so far, though it is uncertain how many were passengers or from the ground.
