Abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. Depending on the situation, it can either be done by prescribed medication or as a surgical procedure in a clinic or hospital.

What caused the different opinions

Abortion is a hotly debated topic. Some people say that the decision to not keep the fetus is a right of the pregnant individual. Others argue that the procedure ends lives and that the government must ban abortions. Bernard Dickens, a professor of health law and policy at the University of Toronto, says “For some people who are pro-choice and support the right to abortion, the fact the fetus is inside the individual’s body means that they get to decide what happens to it.” On the other hand, those who are anti-abortion believe that a fetus is already a human and that abortion is akin to murder.

When does the medical procedure happen?

According to US federal statistics, 94 percent of abortions are performed at or before 13 weeks of pregnancy. At this time, the fetus is at most the size of a tennis ball. 99 percent of abortions are performed before the induvial is 21 weeks pregnant.

Reasons for abortion

Reasons people have abortions include financial, health, and individual conflicts. Often, the person that has an abortion isn’t in the right financial state to have a child or to raise another child. According to a 2014 study by the Guttmacher Institute, 59 percent of people in the US that have abortions already have children, and 75 percent of people who chose abortion live below the poverty line.
