80TH ANNIVERSARY OF BOMBING IN JAPAN
in Hiroshima, a Japanese city. On August 6, 1945, the United States detonated the first atomic bomb used as a weapon of war above Hiroshima. This was during World War II. In Hiroshima, official commemorations are held to mark the event of the bombing.
Hiroshima was destroyed by the atomic bomb “Little Boy”, directly killing approximately one-fifth of the population, or 70,000 people. By the end, 90,000-140,000 people died from radiation and injuries resulting from the explosion.
70% of the city was demolished. The bombing was one of the reasons Japan surrendered during World War II.
During the commemoration, citizens, including children and students, prayed together. Survivor Hiroshi Nishioka, 93, told the ceremony of the horror he had witnessed.
“Even the lucky ones gradually began to bleed from their gums and lose their hair, and one after another they died,” he said.
Today, an organization, the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe), has been created to pass down the idea of global peace to future generations.
