80 Years since Hiroshima
On August 6 2025, people went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to commemorate 80 years passing since the bombing of Hiroshima.
About 55,000 people went to the memorial, and political figures like Japan’s prime minister Shigeru Ishiba also went. The memorial went on for a day.
People commemorated the dead in many ways; some lit incense at the memorial. Children and young people were part of a national service, and they prayed where the bells were rung, while doves were released as a symbol of peace.
People commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima because it shows how devastating nuclear weapons are and the need for global peace. After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which happened a few days after, Japan surrendered in World War 2.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is next to where the bomb hit. The bomb caused 90,000 to 166,000 people to die and about seventy percent of buildings to be destroyed. Today, people still remember what happened and commemorate it every year.
People will commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima for a long time.
