14-year-old student Harini Logan from San Antonio, Texas won the 94th annual Spelling Bee with the newly introduced “spell-off” on June 2nd, 2022, taking place at the National Harbor in Maryland. In the finals and Logan beat her opponent, 12-year-old Vikram Raju.

The 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee was a 3-day event, beginning with 229k contestants, all competing for a title, trophy, and $50,000 in cash prizes.

The spell-off was introduced in the finals this year. It requires both contestants to spell as many words as possible in 90 seconds. Unlike the previous rounds, contestants aren’t allowed to ask questions about the words, such as the definition or the origin.

Raju got 15 out of 19 of the words correct, while Logan got 21 out of 26, making Logan the champion of the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The deciding word that allowed Logan to pull past Raju was “moorhen,” – medium-sized water birds that live in aquatic environments.

The spelling bee final was a new challenge. Zaila Avant-garde, last year’s champion said that, “The fact that Logan and Raju are misspelling these words is a testament to how tough these words are.” In the final round Logan received words like “scyllarian,” “pyrrolidone,” “Otukian” and “Senijextee.” She said the words she received made him realize that over the decades of National Spelling Bees, the words have become more esoteric.

“This is just such a dream,” Logan said Thursday night, as she held up her trophy in front of the national television broadcast.

After the spelling bee, Logan and Raju treated each other with respect instead of teasing each other, “We had that mutual admiration of each other as spellers,” Logan said, “knowing that we’ll both be proud of each other no matter what happens.”

Now that Logan has won the spelling bee, she has other goals to achieve in the future. One of them is to publish a book before she graduates high school.
