Scientists have been striving to protect mountain gorillas from going extinct. According to scientists, extinction is happening at least 100 times more than normal rates, so mountain gorillas are going endangered faster and faster.
Saving mountain gorillas is important because biodiversity is also something the natural world needs. From the foods we eat to the water that we drink, and the air that we breathe, it is also important to humans to help save the environment. Our earth also protects us from pollution, and natural disasters.
Mountain gorillas can’t survive being imprisoned, so the only hope to save them is for humans to protect their habitat.
Mountain gorillas have faced many threats, including poaching, and farmers clearing their habitat. So, it’s quite obvious that humans are the main problem.
Today, the population is growing strong, with more than 1,000 mountain gorillas. Before, they were marked “critically endangered.” Now, they’re status has changed to “endangered” which is huge progress.
However, mountain gorillas have become a tourist attraction. People pay up to $600 just trying to visit a mountain gorilla. Before, mountain gorillas were caught in traps. Now, if you get caught poaching a mountain gorilla, you’ll be sent to jail.
With that said, everyone continues to hope that these animals increase in their population. “We would love to see this population grow but in order to do so, there’s really going to need to be more habitat available to them,” says Tara Stoinski, owner of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
