At least a million people under 18 get concussions per day. Schools are asked to better monitor kids with concussions, since they can last longer than you think. In about a third of concussions, kids experience headaches, sleep problems, poor concentration, and low mood, which can last longer than four weeks. These symptoms therefore lead to poor school performances that will cause worse problems later on. The main reason of concussions is sports and falls. Parents have increasingly started to pull kids out of sport activities. Dr Reidar Lystad stated that,” We don’t want children to stop playing sport or being adventurous, but there is a need to ensure that young people with concussion have access to multidisciplinary healthcare services.” He thinks that schools should do a better job reporting them, since most of time they doesn’t happen during school hours but happen during after school sports.
Melbourne has a 12-day rule where players who get concussed are not allowed to play. They have complete rest for 48 hours and then after a couple of days he sees how they do with walking, running and light training. South Australia’s Department for Education site confirms head injury first aid must be followed if head injury occurs.
