On Sunday, July 30th, The Russian Defense Ministry reported Ukrainian forces had launched at least three drones to Moscow. One of the drones was destroyed in Odintsovo, outside of Moscow, and the other two crashed into commercial buildings in Moscow after being intercepted by Russian air defenses.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine addressed on Sunday that “gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia”. The drone was possibly a counter-attack after the Russians had attacked Odesa, a city very important to Ukraine’s economy, and had cultural and historical significance nonstop.
Ukraine was also accused of using drones to attack Crimea. So far, no attacks in Moscow had been deadly, unlike the drone and missile strikes Russian forces use on a daily basis, often hitting Ukrainian areas with lots of inhabitants.
The first drone attacks on Moscow occurred in early May, followed by three drone attacks in July on Moscow. The attacks ruined the assumption that people in Moscow, 500 miles away from Ukraine, were safe from the fighting. This led to the criticism of Vladimir V. Putin’s management of the war.
Later that Sunday, a Ukranian drone crashed, only about 80 miles from the front lines, according to Russian officials. The drone and the fact that Ukraine have recently been claiming responsibility for many attacks, is a possibility that Ukraine is trying to expand the war.
Ukraine has also been using newly trained soldiers and weapons donated by the United States and Europe. They had also fired more drone and missile strikes in Crimea, essential to Russia’s war efforts.
In a separate statement in early Sunday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that they had intercepted 25 Ukrainian drones targeting Crimea overnight, but this cannot be verified. At the same time, Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia attacked them overnight with four drones.
