On June 24,2023, a train pulling several cars containing hazardous materials derailed into the Yellowstone River in Montana. Tanker cars plunged into the river and demolished the Yellowstone Twin River Bridges in Still Water County, Montana. People have not decided whether the train crash caused the bridge to collapse or the bridge caused the derailment.
Some rail cars contained asphalt, molten sulfur, and even sodium hydro sulfate. Luckily the sulfate did not enter the river. These materials can damage the water and kill multiple animals like oil. KC Williams who is the director of Emergency Management of Yellowstone County reported the crash to ABC News.
Residents have told ABC News there was heavy rainfall in May, including a storm. “It’s completely muddy, so it’s bringing a lot of material down with it,” said John Counter, who lives roughly two miles from the collapsed bridge. “It’s running full banks right now.”
Montana Rail Link stated that the crash happened around 6:45 in the morning while the train was near Reed Point. Several trucks are still in the river. However, none of the crew members were injured.
Montana Rail Link’s crew members are currently investigating the derailment. Residents said the river was running high after the heavy rainfall in May. The accident at Twin Bridges between Reed Point and Columbus parts of Yellowstone and Stillwater Rivers, Montana Department of Fish, and Wildlife and Parks to close to the public.
The sheriff’s office has concluded that there is currently no treats to Yellowstone County that it only left some residents concerned about the water supply.
