A political rally in Pakistan’s northwestern Bajur district turned into a horror scene as a bomb exploded on Sunday, July 30. The bombing resulted in at least thirty-five deaths and more than a hundred people were injured, seventeen critically. Police said that twelve of the individuals killed were under the age of twelve.

The suicide bomber attacked members of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party at their political convention. The JUI-F party is the leading Islamic religious political party, and is part of the coalition government. Local police say that the explosives were planted near the stage the leaders were stood. During the meeting, a few Pakistani political officials were campaigning for the upcoming elections. ISIS does not support their group or their campaigns, and ultimately took responsibility for the attack, according to Amaaq News, the terrorist group’s news channel.

Initially, police believed that only ten people were killed, but as more bodies were sent to the hospital, they were able to confirm that more than thirty-five people died.

The leader of the JUI-F party, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, said in the statement that he expresses “deep sorrow and regret” after the explosion.

The statement also continues, “Peace be upon the JUI-F workers. The federal and provincial government should provide the best treatment to the injured.” (CNN)

One of the witnesses stated that more than 500 people attended the convention. One witness stated, “A powerful explosion knocked me unconscious.” When he woke up again, he saw “people screaming and even shots were fired”. He then added that blood was everywhere.

Unfortunately, the local chief of Rehman’s party, Maulana Ziaullah, was killed in the explosion. Other political figures were able to escape the incident unharmed.

Bajur, which had once been a safe region for militants, was disrupted by this sudden attack. For now, the nation stands in grief and determination, determined to rebuild the peace there once was in Bajur, Pakistan.
