“Top Gun: Maverick,” starring Tom Cruise, is the movie we all needed but didn’t know we wanted. The story is a direct follow up of the original: “Top Gun”, showing familiar characters and themes. However, unlike many other franchises, Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 35-year-old original, was far superior.

In light of Top Gun: Maverick’s success, many are wondering what exactly makes Tom Cruise’s movies so great? The answer is simple. Cruise’s dedication to trying to keep everything as real as possible makes not only Maverick a great movie, but elevates every single movie he stars in.

Cruise’s obsession with making the films as realistic as possible pushes him and the movie crew to their limits. In Top Gun: Maverick, he demanded that computer screen effects be kept to a minimum while also putting him and his colleagues through laborious flight training. Pushing so far that his co-stars were throwing up because of the G-Forces they were simulated to experience. In “Mission Impossible”, for the sake of the film’s quality, Cruise insisted on climbing the world’s tallest mountain, holding his breath for six and a half minutes, and jumping out of airplanes.

In a rapidly advancing world, technological upheavals have allowed the once arduous process of movie making and presentation to be easier. Tom Cruise’s efforts to limit software effects and refusal to work and cooperate with the likes of Amazon and Netflix helps maintain the traditional cinematic experience. An undertaking that keeps Cruise looming above us larger than life in Theaters.

Tom Cruise’s commitment is a stark contrast to the new computer-generated movies. Although Cruise’s commitment to authenticity may seem insignificant, but it is a noticeable difference that plays a real and significant role in the quality.
