Many women around the world exclaim in excitement as they see the results of putting calamine lotion on their face.

Recently trending among women on popular social media platform TikTok, calamine lotion is shown to dry out oily skin, repair acne scars, and keep makeup on for extended periods of time.

“I cannot see my pores anymore,” said one satisfied TikToker. She described her skin after using Calamine Lotion as “super matte.”

This so called “wonder lotion” attracted the attention of many scientists and dermatologists.

Dermatologists warned of the potential long-term side effects, such as drying out the skin or damaging the skin barrier.

Drying out the skin will cause wrinkles and fine lines at a younger age.

One dermatologist, Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, created a TikTok account in hopes of tackling the trend and warning others of the harmful ingredients within Calamine.

She explained to her followers that calamine causes the skin surface to dry up and harden.

“Ferric oxide helps with itching and the phenol is also a powerful exfoliant,” she said.

“Combining phenol with an astringent as in calamine lotion can be very drying and irritating, leading to a damaged skin barrier. It can worsen skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and dermatitis.”

The American Academy of Dermatology stated that calamine would do more harm than good if not used sparingly.

Dermatologists explained that calamine should be used to treat big bites, poison ivy, and rashes.

While some people can tolerate using calamine on a regular basis, it does not work well for everyone and can produce a lot of negative results.

“Much like anything else related to skin care, the potential risks depend on your skin type so it’s best to always check with your dermatologist first,” Shirazi said.
