This forensic scientist is taking crime science out of the lab

Most high school students enjoy science class— just like Kelly Knight. She was interested in chemistry which led her to forensics one day when she was taking a class about analyzing blood during a crime scene. Because of this class, she got absorbed into forensics.

Knight’s dream career of being a forensics scientist wasn’t that easy. She had to face many problems like academic struggles at school. Despite her hardships at school, Knight received her college degree too. She took chemistry classes and any class related to science.

“After an internship at the Bode Laboratory, a large private DNA laboratory, I decided I wanted to go into forensic DNA. I hit a roadblock, though. There are specific classes you have to take in order to be a forensic biologist. I didn’t have those since I was a chemistry major. So I decided to apply to graduate school. I only applied to one school because I knew being admitted would be a stretch; my GPA was not great. I had really struggled through a lot of my chemistry classes,” says Knight.

In Knight’s graduate school, her mentor really helped her change her life and ended up hiring her. When her mentor hired her, she began to teach elementary students about science and investigating crime scenes. She eventually became closer and closer to achieving her dream job. At night, when Knight rested peacefully, her mind could flow with ideas of fun science topics that she could research about, then teach her students. “I used to keep a notepad by my bed just in case I get an idea in my head. Now I just keep my cell phone next to my bed and I open my notes app. At 3 a.m., I may be writing down research ideas,” says Knight.

Soon, Knight began to teach higher grades like high school. She could even get some research topics from her best students. In her teaching career, Knight got an Excellent Teaching Award, and she was very happy. She had become an official forensics scientist. Kelly Knight finally achieved her dream job.
