Texas is putting up a floating barrier at the Rio Grande River to prevent migrants from illegally entering the United States. The barrier will be installed on July 7th, with the intention of slowing down the large number of migrants attempting to enter the United States through the Texas border. The government put this plan into motion with the approval of the Texas Legislature.

The barrier is proving to be extremely pricey, with the first stretch of the barrier costing up to $1 million dollars. The entire project is summing up to $5.1 billion dollars.

Many are supportive of this project. According to Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, the immigration policies in California are pushing more migrants toward the border of the United

States. Mr. DeSantis has also been credited with flying illegal migrants to Sacramento,

California. There, the law accepts migrants freely.

A small city near the border of the United States, Eagle Pass, sees the barrier as a benefit. The city has been sheltering the staggering numbers of migrants with difficulty and welcomes any new policy changes to prevent more from coming.

Migrants are also losing their lives at a steady rate of around one or two people per day. Many have died trying to swim through the river, and their bodies are often found by the Maverick County police.

According to the New York Times, when Rolando Salinas Jr., the mayor of Eagle Pass, was questioned about any safety concerns that the barrier may lead to, he stated that people

shouldn’t even be trying to cross the river.

Overall, US Republican officials appear to strongly oppose the idea of illegal migrants.

Steven McCraw, from the Texas Department of Public Safety, was asked whether

the barrier will pose a threat to migrants with children. He stated that “This [barrier] is a deterrent from even coming in the water.”
