Texas to Place Barrier in Rio Grande to Deter Migrants

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced last week that a floating barrier made of buoys 1,000 feet long would be placed on the Rio Grande to deter migrants from entering the United States from Mexico illegally. The border wall will be placed near the city of Eagle Pass, which has historically been a common location for migrant crossing. Abbott and other Republicans have criticized the Biden Administration for their inability to stop migrants from entering the US illegally.

Many undocumented immigrants enter the US in large groups through the Rio Grande. The river poses great dangers to many who cannot swim. Roberto De Leon, the chief deputy sheriff in Maverick County, including Eagle Pass, said that every day deputies have pulled dead bodies from the river after failed attempts to cross the border ended with drowning.

Eagle Pass is a small city that has been struggling with a large number of arriving migrants, and the city embraced the governor’s efforts to deter Mexicans from entering the United States. “If this means less people will be crossing illegally through the heart of Eagle Pass, we support it,” said Rolando Salinas Jr, the mayor of Eagle Pass, in a recent interview. “We want to avoid any interruption to our international bridges and our downtown businesses.”

The floating barrier poses great difficulty to those who attempt to cross. Each buoy is four feet high and is extremely difficult to climb over while waterlogged by the river. It is nearly impossible to swim under it, as there is webbing attached beneath the surface and the Rio Grande is notorious for its fast waters.

Border security is of high importance, and this barrier is an effective strategy to deter illegal migrants.
