On June 24, The Supreme Court of the United States removed New York’s law that restricted

gun carrying rights because the court found it violated the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.

The new rule approved by the 7 judges helps expand gun rights at the same time as gun control is the topic of much debate.

The previous rule that New York implemented required residents to have a good reason to be

carrying guns in public.

US President, Joe Biden, was very disappointed in the court’s decision. Agreeing with the

president, Justice Breyer noted that “Since the start of this year alone, there have already been 277 reported mass shootings – an average of more than one per day,”.

This decision has caused conflicts among the United States as shown in the Congress. Both

Republicans and Democrats are expressing their own opinions on the situation.

A Republican pulls out his guns during a Congress debate on the new gun legislation saying,

“Here’s a gun I carry every single day to protect myself, my family, my wife, my home…So this

gun would be banned.”

More than 390 million guns were allowed and owned by citizens in the US and more than

45,000 Americans died because of gun related issues just from 2020 alone.

Despite the debates, the Supreme Courts continues to expand gun rights by referring to the

Second Amendment of the US Constitution which protects the right to “keep and bear arms.”.

The Senate passed the first national gun control bill in almost three decades by 65-33. The law expands background checks and offers funding. The bill must go through the House of Representatives, then President Joe Biden to become an official law.
